Open pictures with a double click
A double click on a picture in Explorer opens it in the app Windows has for it. Windows lets only you choose that app — no app can make itself the one — so Cobalt Photo shows where each type stands and asks Windows for you, all at once or a type at a time.

File association, in the settings
Cobalt Photo File Association in Start is the settings with only General (language, theme) and File association; in the other apps it is ⋯ → Tools → Options… → File association. It lists every picture type Cobalt Photo opens — 41 of them, from JPEG and HEIC to the RAW files of 17 camera makers — each with its icon, its files and the app it opens in now.
- Open all in Cobalt Photo… opens Windows' page for Cobalt Photo Viewer, where Set default makes every type its own in one click (below, what to do when Windows has no such button).
- Use Cobalt Photo on a type opens Windows' own How do you want to open .heic files? — pick Cobalt Photo Viewer, and that type opens in it from then on. Keep any type with another app: just leave it.
- All, Not yet and Cobalt Photo above the list show all the types, the ones still with another app, or the ones already Cobalt Photo's. The RAW types show their first few until Show all.
Coming back from Windows, the list is read again at once, so what you changed shows straight away.
Right after installing, the types no other app on your PC opens — such as Krita and OpenRaster files — already open in Cobalt Photo; the rest stay with the apps they had until you choose.
From the viewer: one click to the right place
The first time a picture opens in Cobalt Photo's viewer, a small note at the top asks: Open pictures here with a double click? File association… opens the settings at File association; Not now closes the note, and it does not come back. The same is in ⋯ → Tools → Options… → Viewer → Open pictures with a double click, for any time later.
In Windows' settings
- On Windows' page for Cobalt Photo Viewer (Open all in Cobalt Photo… takes you there; otherwise Settings → Apps → Default apps, then Cobalt Photo Viewer in the list).
- If Windows shows Set default at the top, click it: every picture type the viewer opens is its own at once.
- Otherwise (Windows 10) click the types you want one by one —
.jpg,.png,.heic,.webp… — and choose Cobalt Photo Viewer for each, or use Use Cobalt Photo in File association.
For one type, from Explorer
Right-click a picture of that type, choose Open with → Choose another app, pick Cobalt Photo Viewer and click Always. Pictures of that type open in it from then on.
Going back
To have another app open a type again, do the same with that app: Windows keeps one app for each type, the last one you chose.
