Search in the picture manager

Find pictures by name, type, size and date, in the folder you look at and in every folder inside it. Type what you want in the search line, or click it together with the mouse: both are the same search.

One search, two ways to make it

The search line at the top of the manager takes plain words, masks and a few key:value words. Each part of the search becomes a chip under the folder's name, and the pictures change as you type or click.

Type it

*.png size:>2mb modified:2021 — PNG pictures larger than 2 MB, changed in 2021. Nothing to open, no button to press: the grid shows what matches at once.

Or click it

Filter next to the sort, or Add filter under the folder's name, adds a condition. Click a chip to change it on its card: ready-made sizes, the years as bars, types with how many pictures each has.

Both are one search

A changed chip writes the line again, a typed line makes the chips. Click your way through once and read the line: that is how the words below are learned.

The ⓘ in the search line (or F1 while you type) shows what you can type, in short.

With the mouse alone: Find pictures

Not a word to type: the sliders button next to ⓘ in the search line opens Find pictures, a window with the whole search on one page. It is also at the top of the Filter menu, and on Ctrl+Shift+F.

  • Ready-made on the left fills it in one click: Screenshots, Large pictures, Taken this year, Every December, On this day, Photos at night, 4K and bigger, Panoramas, 360° photos, Phone photos… Change any part after it.
  • Name, Type, Size, Date, Picture and Camera or phone each turn on with their switch and offer choices, each with how many pictures it would find: kinds of names, the types there are, ready-made sizes, times and the years as bars, the time of day, sizes in pixels and shapes, the cameras and phones there are. Where says where to look.
  • At the bottom, always in view: the first pictures found, how many, and the line the search will be — the same words as above, if you want to learn them.
  • Show closes the window: what you picked becomes the chips under the folder's name, and the grid shows the pictures. Opened again, the window starts from the search as it is.

Names

Anything without a key is about the file's name. Capital and small letters are the same, unless you ask otherwise.

TypeFinds
*.pngNames by mask, as in Total Commander: * stands for any text.
*.png*.jpgSeveral masks: a picture that matches any of them.
*One*.*A mask ending in .* also takes a name without an extension.
IMG_00??.jpg? stands for exactly one character: IMG_0012.jpg, not IMG_012.jpg.
sunsetA word without * or ? is found anywhere in the name.
sunset beachSeveral words: names that have all of them, in any order.
"new year"Words in quotes are one phrase, spaces and all.
*.jpg;*.pngA semicolon parts masks as a space does, as in Total Commander.
-*.gif-thumbA minus leaves out: no GIF pictures; nothing with “thumb” in its name.
/^IMG_\d{4}\.HEIC$/Between slashes: a regular expression, tested against the whole name. On the name's card it is the Regular expression toggle.
case:yesCapital and small letters count (Match case on the name's card).

Masks and words go together: *.png sunset finds PNG pictures with “sunset” in the name.

Type

TypeFinds
type:pngPictures of one type.
type:jpg, heic, webpPictures of any of these types.
-type:gifEvery type but this one.

The types the manager shows: JPG (also jpeg), PNG, HEIC (also heif), WebP, AVIF, TIFF (also tif), GIF, BMP, JXR and ICO. On the type's card each one shows how many pictures it has.

Size

TypeFinds
size:>2mbLarger than 2 MB.
size:<500kbSmaller than 500 KB.
size:1mb..5mbFrom 1 to 5 MB.
size:~2mbAbout 2 MB: 5 % either way, from 1.9 to 2.1 MB — for “the one of 2 MB” that Explorer showed rounded.
-size:>20mbEverything but the files larger than 20 MB.

kb, mb and gb count as Explorer does: 1 MB is 1,024 KB. Without a unit a number is in MB.

Dates

modified: is when the file was last saved, created: when it got onto this disk. Every form below works with both.

TypeFinds
modified:2021In 2021.
modified:2019..2023From 2019 to 2023. On the date's card, click a year's bar; Shift+click another one for a range.
modified:2021-06In June 2021.
modified:2021-06-14On 14 June 2021.
modified:2021-06-01..2021-08-31From one day to another, both of them included.
modified:>2020modified:<2020After 2020 (from 2021 on); before 2020 (until the end of 2019).
modified:>2024-03-01On 1 March 2024 or later; < before a day is on that day or earlier.
modified:todaymodified:yesterdayToday; yesterday.
modified:7d2w3m1yThe last 7 days (today one of them); 2 weeks, 3 months, a year.
created:decIn December of any year: all the Decembers. january or jan, and so on.
created:thisdayOn today's day and month in any year: a year ago today, two years ago…

Created is rarely the day a photo was taken: copied to a new PC, all the photos get the day of copying. For photos, taken: below is the date you want.

What is inside the photos

When a photo was taken, its size in pixels, its shape and the camera or phone are inside the file, not in Explorer's list. The search reads them once from each file's header — no picture is opened — and keeps them, so the next search is instant.

TypeFinds
taken:2021taken:2019..2023Taken in 2021; from 2019 to 2023. Every form of modified: works with taken: too. A picture without a camera date (a screenshot, one from a messenger) counts by when it was changed.
taken:dectaken:thisdayTaken in December of any year; on today's day and month in any year.
time:night, eveningTaken at night or in the evening, by the camera's clock: morning 5–11, day 11–17, evening 17–22, night 22–5.
res:4kres:fhdres:small4K and more, by the longer side, so a portrait 3024 × 4032 photo is 4K too: 8k, 4k, 2k, fhd, hd; small is smaller than HD.
width:>=1920height:<=1080long:>=3000both:>=1000A side at least or at most so many pixels: the width, the height, the longer side, both sides.
mp:>=1212 megapixels or more (<= for at most).
orient:portrait,pano,360Portraits and panoramas: landscape, portrait, square, pano (twice as long as high, or more), 360 (a 360° photo: the whole sphere around, as its camera marked it — 2:1 too, but not counted among panoramas). The camera's turn is taken into account.
device:iphonedevice:"canon eos"Taken with an iPhone, any of them; a part of the name is enough. The names are the ones the cameras write into the photos — the device's card lists the ones there are.
device:nonePictures that name no camera: mostly screenshots, edited pictures and ones from messengers.

The first search of a folder reads its pictures in the background: the line under the folder's name says how far it is, and the pictures come in as they are read. Files kept only in the cloud are not read — that would download them — so they are not found by these words.

Places

Where a photo was taken comes from its GPS, read with the other details. Cobalt Photo names the country, the region and the town itself, from countries and towns built into it: nothing is sent anywhere, and it works offline.

TypeFinds
in:spainin:испанияTaken in Spain. Any of the app's languages works, and case and accents do not matter: in:españa, in:spanien.
in:cataloniaTaken in a region: a state, a province, a land.
in:barcelonain:"new york"Taken in a town: the nearest town of a thousand people or more, within 15 km. A name with a space goes in quotes.
in:barcelona~10kmTaken in Barcelona or within 10 km of it: its suburbs and beaches too.
in:spain,portugalTaken in any of them.
-in:poland-in:homeTaken anywhere but Poland; home is the country of Windows' region settings, so -in:home is every trip abroad. Photos without a location are in no place, so they are not found by these.
gps:yesgps:noPhotos with a location, or without one: screenshots, pictures from messengers and editors, cameras without GPS.

The Place card lists the countries the photos were taken in, their regions and towns, with how many in each: a click chooses one, the field above finds one by any of its names. Find pictures has the same in its Place part, and the ready-made Trips and Without location.

A town is the nearest one, a big town reaching further than a small one; further than 15 km from any, the inspector says how far the nearest is. Places come from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0) and Natural Earth.

Saved searches

A search you come back to can be kept in the sidebar under Searches, with the folder it looks in and whether it looks in the folders inside it too.

  • Save search in the row of conditions, the + beside Searches or Ctrl+S: a name is offered from the conditions; change it if you like.
  • A click opens its folder with the search in the line, its name over the pictures. Pictures added since that match are in it by themselves: a saved search is a question, not a list.
  • Beside its name, how many it found when it was open last (it can be turned off on the same card).
  • Right-click: rename it, put the search shown in its place (the name stays), move it up or down, delete it. Deleting a search deletes no pictures.

All or any

A picture is shown when it matches every condition. With match:any (or Match any under the folder's name), one of them is enough.

TypeFinds
*.png size:>2mbPNG pictures that are larger than 2 MB.
match:any type:gif size:>20mbGIF pictures, and any picture larger than 20 MB.

Where it looks

The first chip under the folder's name says where the search looks; the choice is kept.

  • This folder and the ones in it — the folder shown and every folder inside it, however deep, as Explorer's search does. The pictures come in while the folders are looked through; the line under the folder's name says when it is done.
  • Only this folder — just the pictures of the folder shown.
  • Hidden and system files and folders are left out, as Explorer leaves them out.
  • Files kept only in the cloud (OneDrive, Dropbox “online only”) are found by their name, size and dates; no file is downloaded to search them.
  • A picture found in a folder below: Go to its folder in its menu opens that folder with it selected.

Select by mask

As in Total Commander, the numeric keypad selects without hiding anything: the pictures a mask takes are added to the selection, or taken out of it. The field takes the same words as the search line, so size:>10mb or modified:2021 work there too.

KeyDoes
Num +Select by mask: add the pictures it takes to the selection.
Num −Deselect by mask: take them out of the selection.
Num *Invert the selection.
Ctrl+Num +Select all.
Ctrl+Num −Select none.

Select by mask… and Deselect by mask… are in the ⋯ menu of the selection bar and in the menu of the grid's empty space too.
